The Filmmakers Coalition Charter

BRIGHTON FILMMAKERS COALITION

A free Brighton support network guiding first time filmmakers, artists and professionals into realising their projects.

OVERVIEW

The Brighton filmmakers coalition 'BFC' is Brighton's fastest growing free filmmaking resource. We believe in helping others to accomplish their projects, not merely supporting them with workshops or a simple network group. Collectively our knowledge is shared throughout a group of amateurs and professionals, from local information to industry advice. We promote an attitude of creativity and community.

OBJECTIVES

- To create a sustainable and supportive resource for local filmmakers and the media arts.

- To build mutually beneficial links and contacts from within the local and national community.

- To encourage the making of films and to become a platform for members to develop their work.

- To nurture new or inexperienced filmmakers.

- To support more experienced practitioners in furthering their craft.

- To share knowledge and experience, both creative and technical from the members within the BFC.

- To create a vibrant and productive community of filmmakers and artists.

- To encourage the screening and exhibition of members work.

- To build a database of local cast, crew, artists and resources.

WHAT WE OFFER

- Weekly Meetings
A point of contact for new members to meet us and everyone to pitch their projects and discuss
ideas. We try to expand our community through these meetings and encourage new members.

- Weekly Newsletter
Provides minutes of that Sundays meeting and advertising for cast, crew, locations on behalf of
those members unable to attend the previous meeting.

- Website
Anyone can join this free networking site, which provides a vast range of interactive features i.e.
video uploading, blogs, cast and crew profiles, news and filmmaking information.

- Workshops
These are predominately provided freely and cover a good range of areas within film and related media, from pre to post production and beyond.
Run by members who want to share skills.

- Production Consultants
A mentoring service offered for free at any stage in a members project. A Production consultant is assigned to a
film to ensure a more direct level of support, raising production values, nurturing new talent and aiding in realising a project its conclusion.

- Film Challenges
These are run every 3 months by a different member, for anyone willing to participate. They differ
each time in their themes, but always educate and inspire those who take part, especially if they are
completely new to filmmaking. The challenges are opent o anyone who wants to take part and end with a free public screening

- Events
As well as showing the challenge films and having a yearly review, we also try to hold weekly screenings of short and features films, decided by
a different member each time. We help organise group excursions to other relevant events, regionally and nationally i.e festivals,
screenings, exhibitions.

WHAT WE DO NOT OFFER

- Funding
We do not offer any form of funding to members. We aim to aid and encourage finding resources for free where possible.
For funding sources please refer to the website.

- Equipment
We currently cannot offer direct access to equipment, but do have members that share according to the project or know of where
to source equipment.

WHAT THE COALITION ASK OF ITS MEMBERS

The following guidelines are not to restrict or hinder your creativity, they are set down to protect everyone in the group and to protect the group itself. We are trying to create a sense of pride and professionalism within our members that will reflect back on us all and give us a good reputation within the community. You are representatives of the coalition and the group when you use its resources, so use your own common sense and look out for your fellow members.

1) To bring with you a sense of sharing and community by supporting and helping fellow members when possible.
2) To always provide a copy of your finished challenges or films to anyone you promised it to including cast, crew, external help and
the resource manager of the coalition.
3) To not agree, sign, OR promise anything of the coalition or put into the public domain something that represents the coalition without talking to the relevant
coalition managers.
4) To be aware of health and safety issues when filming and to be aware of local laws and restrictions on filming.
5) To provide adequate food and drink to crew and casting when working on a film.
6) To provide basic expenses on your film, subject to the understanding of the group and parties involved.
7) If you start a 'collaborative' project be sure to involve everyone you collaborate with in important decision making.
8) To help in the furthering of the groups education, knowledge and understanding of film, the production process and the media arts.
9) To place a thank you to the coalition with the rest of the films thank you credits or use the intro logo, if you use the coalition in the making of your film.
10) To consider the use of release forms for relevant areas of filmmaking.

We aim to support anyone who comes to us for help and advice but we reserve the right to revoke any resources or support if members or people using our help are acting in a way that will put others in danger, put the coalition at risk or in a negative light and those that continually act in a none professional way after advice and help.

Future Developments

To promote and further the awareness of the 'BFC' within the local and creative community, we want to expand, while strengthening our base and help push forward new filmmakers and become a supportive platform to enable the experienced practitioner. Our future developments will be outlined as they move into more active and workable states.
